1) Bonjour Stéphane, comment allez-vous et comment se passe la vie à Siem Reap ?

Bonjour Marc.
Je suis arrivé à Siem Reap en avril 2025 et je travaille depuis mon domicile, comme je le faisais depuis 2009 en France.
Je vais très bien, notamment depuis que je vis dans un pays chaud et que je peux nager tous les jours dans ma piscine, ce qui me permet de soigner mon mal de dos, grande pathologie des informaticiens en remote.
La vie ici est douce, dans le respect et le calme.
Je peux adapter mes horaires selon mes pics d’énergie tout en planifiant mes futurs voyages en Asie.

1) Hello Stéphane, how are you and how is life in Siem Reap?

Hello Marc.
I arrived in Siem Reap in April 2025 and I work from home, as I had been doing since 2009 in France.
I am very well, especially since I live in a hot country and can swim every day in my pool, which allows me to treat my back pain, a common ailment for remote IT workers.
Life here is gentle, respectful, and calm.
I can adapt my schedule according to my energy peaks while planning my future travels in Asia.

2) Pourquoi avez-vous choisi Siem Reap, et pas Phnom Penh ?

Un ami d’enfance m’en a parlé en septembre 2024 en très grand bien.
J’ai par conséquent regardé des dizaines de vidéos YouTube, dont les tiennes, et j’ai été attiré par cette ville moyenne bien qu’animée et proche des temples angkoriens. D’autre part, il est possible de commander tout ce que l’on veut à Phnom Penh et le recevoir ici sous 24-48 h pour 1 $, le plus souvent.
J’ai aussi visité Phnom Penh et j’ai apprécié son énergie et sa diversité architecturale, avec une mention spéciale pour le rooftop Sora au sommet de l’hôtel Rosewood.

2) Why did you choose Siem Reap, and not Phnom Penh?

A childhood friend spoke very highly of it to me in September 2024.
I consequently watched dozens of YouTube videos, including yours, and was drawn to this mid-sized city that is both lively and close to the Angkorian temples. Furthermore, it’s possible to order anything you want from Phnom Penh and receive it here within 24-48 hours for $1, most of the time.
I also visited Phnom Penh and appreciated its energy and architectural diversity, with a special mention for the Sora rooftop at the top of the Rosewood hotel.

3) Quelles sont vos activités professionnelles ? Que recherchez-vous, et que proposez-vous ?

Après 13 ans en mission pour de grands groupes sur Paris, puis 10 ans de e-commerce, j’ai créé ma boîte de conseil mais surtout de déploiement de contenus et de notoriété en SEO (référencement naturel sur Google), avec la puissance d’une agence sans les désavantages, le tout en plusieurs langues.
En effet, je fais travailler une équipe appliquant des processus précis et certains freelances, en fonction des besoins et sans coûts de structure.
Je peux ainsi m’adapter aux fluctuations de l’activité tout en me consacrant à la veille, la R&D, la communication, la vente et la relation client.
Dans ce cadre, j’utilise énormément l’IA que je peux désormais implanter dans les entreprises, dont une bonne partie est en grand danger si elles restent dans l’attente par rapport à cette énorme vague de fond qui est en train de se former.
Je suis dans une démarche d’entraide (qui est à la base de la création du web), je recherche donc avant tout de la bienveillance et de l’ouverture d’esprit chez mes interlocuteurs et partenaires afin d’avancer ensemble sereinement dans un contexte ultra-concurrentiel.

3) What are your professional activities? What are you looking for, and what do you offer?

After 13 years on assignments for large corporations in Paris, followed by 10 years in e-commerce, I created my consulting company, but more specifically, one focused on content deployment and SEO (natural referencing on Google) brand awareness. It offers the power of an agency without the disadvantages, all in multiple languages.
Indeed, I manage a team applying precise processes and certain freelancers, depending on needs and with no overhead costs.
This allows me to adapt to fluctuations in activity while dedicating myself to monitoring, R&D, communication, sales, and customer relations.
In this context, I use AI extensively, which I can now implement in companies, a good number of which are in great danger if they remain passive towards this massive underlying wave that is forming.
I am driven by a philosophy of mutual aid (which was the basis of the web’s creation), so I am primarily looking for kindness and open-mindedness in my interlocutors and partners to move forward together serenely in a highly competitive context.

4) Avez-vous l’intention de rester au Cambodge ? Comment voyez-vous l’avenir de ce pays, quels sont ses atouts ?

J’ai déjà tout ce qu’il faut pour rester ici, mais je reste ouvert aux opportunités dans les pays aux alentours, et suis prêt à me déplacer, voire à changer d’implantation si le projet personnel et professionnel en vaut la peine.
Il reste tellement à faire ici, notamment au niveau des infrastructures. Des autoroutes, la fibre, le pays manque de tellement de choses. Et pourtant il avance assez vite grâce à une forte capacité de mobilisation (exemple : la ville de Siem Reap a été rénovée de fond en comble pendant le Covid, mais aussi la skyline de Phnom Penh, métamorphosée en moins de 20 ans). La population ici est très jeune, capable d’une grande résilience et généreuse.

4) Do you intend to stay in Cambodia? How do you see the future of this country, what are its assets?

I already have everything I need to stay here, but I remain open to opportunities in the surrounding countries and am ready to move, or even change my base, if the personal and professional project is worth it.
There is still so much to do here, especially regarding infrastructure. Highways, fiber optics… the country lacks so many things. And yet, it is advancing quite quickly thanks to a strong capacity for mobilization (for example: the city of Siem Reap was completely renovated during Covid, but also the Phnom Penh skyline, metamorphosed in less than 20 years). The population here is very young, capable of great resilience, and generous.

5) Avez-vous des conseils pour les Français qui souhaitent s’expatrier au Cambodge ?

Surtout, renouvelez votre passeport avant de venir, s’il doit expirer sous 18 mois, car cela pourrait bien vous jouer des tours.
Obtenir les visas de longue durée s’avère bien plus tendu qu’annoncé et si votre couple est mixte avec une personne née en Afrique, bon courage.
Les groupes Facebook sont particulièrement actifs et une bonne base de départ pour faire des connaissances avant même d’être sur place.
Les choses se passent ici avec une certaine fluidité et quoi que l’on dise des Français, beaucoup seront prêts à vous aider.
Cela dit, venir à Siem Reap sans argent et/ou sans un projet professionnel bien pensé pourrait causer une belle désillusion.

5) Do you have any advice for French people who wish to move to Cambodia?

Above all, renew your passport before coming if it is due to expire within 18 months, as that could really cause you problems.
Obtaining long-term visas turns out to be much more stressful than advertised, and if you are in a mixed couple with a person born in Africa, good luck.
Facebook groups are particularly active and a good starting point for making connections even before being on the ground.
Things happen here with a certain fluidity, and whatever people say about the French, many will be ready to help you.
That said, coming to Siem Reap without money and/or without a well-thought-out professional project could lead to a serious disappointment.
